Banyak orang mengira penyakit infeksi hanya menyerang organ secara langsung. Hantavirus menunjukkan bahwa gangguan pada pembuluh darah saja bisa menyebabkan kerusakan besar di seluruh tubuh.
Saat pembuluh darah mulai bocor, organ-organ vital seperti paru-paru dan ginjal menjadi korban karena keduanya sangat bergantung pada sirkulasi cairan yang stabil dan presisi. Itulah sebabnya sebagian pasien mengalami gagal napas, sementara yang lain mengalami gagal ginjal.
