Lagu "Defying Gravity" yang jadi soundtrack film Wicked, menunjukkan adegan ketegangan antara Elphaba dan Glinda. Elphaba menemukan kekuatan dengan menerima statusnya sebagai orang yang berbeda atau "outsider," yang membuat penonton bersimpati padanya.

Lagu ini dimulai dengan percakapan antara Elphaba dan Glinda, yang berubah menjadi pertengkaran yang semakin tajam, seperti debat nyata antara teman. 

Lagu "Defying Gravity" merupakan lagu khas dari teater musikal Wicked. Lagu ini dipopulerkan oleh Idina Menzel dan Kristin Chenoweth sejak 2003.

Pada versi film di tahun 2024, lagu ini dibawakan oleh Ariana Grande dan Cynthia Erivo.  Lagu "Defying Gravity" memang selalu dibawakan oleh karakter utama Elphaba dan Glinda dalam di Wicked.

Proses rekaman lagu ini pertama kali dilakukan pada 10 November 2003. Kemudian perdana dirilis pada 16 Desember 2003. Terhitung, usia lagu "Defying Gravity" sudah lebih dari 20 tahun!
