Seperti dijelaskan sebelumnya, teh hijau punya kafein jauh lebih sedikit dibanding matcha, jadi teh hijau bisa lebih cocok buat orang yang ingin mengurangi asupan kafein. Jumlah kafein dalam teh hijau pada umumnya masih aman untuk kebanyakan orang. Namun, terlalu banyak kafein bisa menimbulkan beberapa gejala tidak nyaman. Tanda-tandanya bisa berupa sakit kepala, susah tidur, gelisah, mudah marah, sering buang air kecil, detak jantung cepat, sampai otot gemetar.
Untuk ibu hamil dan menyusui, disarankan membatasi kafein maksimal 200 mg per hari. Buat orang dengan penyakit jantung, batas kafein harian juga sebaiknya tidak lebih dari 200 mg. Kalau punya kondisi medis tertentu, sebaiknya konsultasikan dengan dokter untuk tahu batas aman kafein yang sesuai kebutuhanmu.
Anak-anak dan remaja juga disarankan menghindari kafein. Kalau suka minum teh, lebih baik pilih teh herbal tanpa kafein yang rasanya beragam dan tetap enak diminum.
