Hong Sang Soo mengawali karier di industri perfilman ketika menempuh pendidikan di Universitas Chung-Ang, Korea Selatan. Ia kemudian pindah ke Amerika Serikat untuk menyelesaikan gelar sarjananya di California College of Arts and Crafts dan gelar magister di School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Hong Sang Soo memulai debutnya sebagai sutradara pada usia 35 tahun melalui proyek The Day a Pig Fell into the Well (1996). Kendati jadi film perdana yang digarap, karya tersebut langsung menuai pujian dari kritikus film Korea Selatan. Apalagi, sejumlah penghargaan juga berhasil disabetnya melalui film tersebut.

Di samping itu, banyak film Hong Sang Soo yang menerima respons positif, karena penggambaran hubungan manusia sehari-hari. Namanya pun semakin dikenal sebagai salah satu sutradara Korea yang populer di industri perfilman internasional. Ini karena film-film art house beranggaran rendah garapannya telah banyak diputar di kompetisi Festival Film Cannes, Festival Film Internasional Berlin, dan festival film lainnya.

Pada Juni 2016, Hong Sang Soo dikabarkan punya hubungan romantis dengan aktris Kim Min Hee yang juga tampil dalam film Right Now, Wrong Then (2015). Relasi keduanya telah terjalin selama setahun sejak sebelum terungkap. Kabar tersebut cukup menghebohkan, mengingat sang sutradara masih terikat pernikahan sah dengan istri yang dinikahinya pada 1985.

Hong Sang Soo dan Kim Min Hee lantas memutuskan tinggal bersama pada 2015 lalu. Dilansir The Korea Times pada (14/6/2019), Hong Sang Soo telah mengajukan gugatan cerai kepada istrinya pada 2017, tetapi ditolak pengadilan dan tidak diketahui statusnya hingga saat ini.

Kini pasangan tersebut kembali disorot akibat berita kehamilan Kim Min Hee yang mengandung anak biologis Hong Sang Soo.
