Menstruasi terlewat mungkin terjadi karena ketersediaan energi yang rendah, terutama pada atlet remaja. Ini dapat terjadi jika kamu tidak mengambil energi yang cukup dibandingkan dengan energi yang dibakar melalui olahraga.
Orang yang membatasi asupan makanannya dan melakukan olahraga ekstrem, dengan atau tanpa menggunakan obat pencahar, dapat mengalami amenorea (terhentinya haid secara abnormal). Ini dapat dianggap sebagai tanda peringatan untuk masalah kesehatan lain yang terkait dengan energi rendah, seperti akrual tulang yang buruk dan kepadatan mineral tulang yang rendah, yang keduanya terkait dengan penurunan kekuatan tulang.
