Saat ini, pencegahan utama tetap menghindari paparan hewan pengerat. Langkah yang direkomendasikan meliputi:
Menutup celah masuk tikus di rumah.
Menyimpan makanan dalam wadah tertutup.
Membersihkan area yang mungkin terkontaminasi dengan disinfektan, bukan disapu kering.
Menggunakan sarung tangan dan masker saat membersihkan gudang, loteng, atau area tertutup lama.
Langkah-langkah di atas penting karena banyak kasus terjadi bukan karena kontak langsung dengan tikus, melainkan karena seseorang menghirup partikel virus yang beterbangan saat membersihkan area terkontaminasi.
Sampai detik ini belum ada vaksin hantavirus yang tersedia secara global. Beberapa vaksin lokal memang sudah digunakan di China dan Korea Selatan, tetapi belum menjadi standar internasional. Penelitian vaksin generasi baru memberi harapan, tetapi masih butuh waktu sebelum bisa digunakan secara luas.
Sementara itu, perlindungan terbaik tetap dengan mengenali risiko, mencegah paparan hewan pengerat, dan memahami bahwa penyakit langka bukan berarti bisa diabaikan.
