The blue whale is the largest animal to have ever existed on Earth, not just the largest whale alive today. They dwarf all dinosaurs in size; they are mind-blowingly enormous. All of the ocean giants, including blue whales, spend their whole lives in seawater.
The average length of a blue whale is 29 meters, or nearly the length of three parked red double-decker London buses. Female blue whales are larger than male blue whales, and blue whales in the Southern Hemisphere are typically larger than those in the Northern Hemisphere.
The longest blue whale ever recorded was a female who was 33.58 meters long when she was measured in 1909 at a South Georgia whaling station in the South Atlantic. The heaviest blue whale was also a female hunted in the Southern Ocean, Antarctica, on 20 March 1947. She tipped the scales at 190 tonnes which is equivalent to about 30 elephants or 2500 people.
Blue whales are now extremely rare due to uncontrolled commercial whaling. Some populations could be endangered to the point of extinction.
