Meskipun hubungan antara GERD dan anxiety belum diketahui betul, tetapi kecemasan bisa memicu atau memperparah gejala GERD. Sering kali, refluks asam lambung dan kecemasan bisa ditangani sendiri di rumah. Akan tetapi, jika kecemasan dan GERD sudah parah atau tak tertahankan, jangan berpikir dua kali untuk berkonsultasi ke dokter dan psikolog atau psikiater.
Jika GERD dibiarkan, maka dapat menyebabkan komplikasi fatal dan bukan tidak mungkin gejala penyakit jantung menyamar jadi GERD. Hal tersebut juga berlaku untuk kecemasan. Selain itu, karena gejala-gejala GERD dan anxiety bisa saling tumpang tindih, pemeriksaan dokter sangat diperlukan untuk mendapat diagnosis yang akurat.
