Tidak ada dasar ilmiah untuk menganggap AC secara umum harus dihindari.
Dalam cuaca sangat panas, ruang yang sejuk justru penting untuk mencegah penyakit akibat panas. Rekomendasi umumnya adalah pengaturan sekitar 27 derajat Celsius yang dikombinasikan dengan kipas untuk menjaga kenyamanan sekaligus efisiensi.
Yang lebih penting adalah kualitas lingkungan dalam ruangan. EPA menyarankan kelembapan relatif dalam rumah sekitar 30–50 persen, ventilasi yang memadai, pengendalian sumber polutan, serta pembersihan atau penggantian filter AC secara berkala. Kebocoran dan sumber kelembapan yang memungkinkan jamur tumbuh juga perlu diperbaiki.
Jika mata, hidung, kulit, atau saluran napas selalu bermasalah ketika berada di ruangan ber-AC namun membaik setelah keluar, yang perlu menjadi perhatian adalah kelembapan, arah embusan udara, ventilasi, filter, jamur, dan kualitas udara ruangan.
